
Mesi is the largest of the four regions of
Corfu.
Corfu town: this town its said to be the most
lively, varied and attractive city in entire Greece. It is situated on the islands long
east cost. The city can be divided into three areas:
1) The old town: with its
narrow streets and the old fort.
2) The new town: with its
commercial harbour
3) The shopping district,
with Kanoni and the beautiful place Pontikonisi.

The old Venetian Fortress has been cut from the mainland with a channel which is 25 meters
wide, the known Kontrafossa. The fortress is surrounded by water. West from this old
fortress is the largest and most smashing area in Greece, like some call it, the area
Spianada, with its beautiful buildings.
The north side if the
Spianada, you can find the Royal Palace and inside is the museum of Asian art and on the
west side the famous Liston area, a building built during the French occupation, which is
today a lot of different cafeterias and restaurants. Just close by you can find Agios
Spiridonas, the church to the guardian angel of the island and the town hall, a beautiful
Venetian building. The old town is pressed together between Spianada and the new fortress.
A walk through the narrow streets in the old town is an
amazing experience.
The Archaeological museum
contains findings which is found all over Corfu. The museum lies on the south side of
Spianada. A little more south you can find the monument of Menerates and Analipsis.
Garitsa its about 500 meters from Corfu town. Here you can enjoy a very good atmosphere
under the eucalyptus trees and go for a lovely walk. And if you are hungry there is a lot
of different taverns. From here you can see the old fortress and in the night its a
special view. Uphill from Garitsa bay you will find Mon Repo, a villa which the King used
for accommodation during their holidays in Corfu. Kings like King George I of Greece and Queen Elisabeth from
Austria. Also in this area you can find the remains of the temple of Hera. The temple was
built 600 BC.
Kanoni: a little area with an outstanding view. The wonderful view
has become Corfus trademark. The name Kanoni come from the time the French installed
a large canon here. Today its still there on the top. No one who comes to
Corfu should not miss this great view no matter the time of the day.
In the middle of Corfu town you can find the San Roccos Square, its the Piccadilly
circus of Corfu. Noisy, lots of shops, and cafés. Here you also can find the taxi station
and the blue bus station.
Mandouki a quiet famous neighbourhood in Corfu town, its situated a little bit outside.
Here you can find the traditional kafenion, places where only the old men is allowed to
relax and drink coffee. In the old days the people who lived here lived from the sea and
fishing. And even now you can find places to buy and eat fresh fish. The buildings are
old, about 100 years, its not filled with new buildings like you find in the other places
in Corfu tow. A few meters from Mandouki you can find the famous disco strip of Corfu.
Dasia: its a tourist area with a beach with sand and little rocks. You want to
come here if you are interested in water sports, its a very active place for these
kinds of activities. The nightlife is ok, not as hot as in Gouvia.
Gouvia: Its
the nightlife and that its situated close to Corfu town that made Gouvia so popular. There
is a large marina in Gouvia and its said that it's one of the best in Greece. From the
marina facing Gouvia you will find ruins of a old Venetian waft. Gouvia
has a 500 meter long main street, with shops, tavernas, bars and hotels. The beach has
small rocks and the water is brown because of the mud ground in the water, but its very
nice to stay there just to get a tan on the beach.
Linked with Gouvia you will find the beautiful area of Kommeno. Its a majestic
place full of green beauty. Its a luxurious place with some expensive hotels and enormous
villas. From Kommeno you can look to Epirys and Albania. There is also a little wonderful
church situated here, called Church of Ipapanti.
Pirgi: Its a tourist
area close to Ipsos, like Ipsos Pirgi has bars, markets, Hotels and friendly people. Its a
lovely place for swimming, a afternoon walk and place for fantastic night amusement.
Vatos: a little village
15km from the city. Here you can find two Byzantine churches, Agios Nikolaos and Agios
Georgios. About 3 km from Vaos you will find Ermones, situated on the west coast with rocks and hillsides. People who
come here can enjoy the lovely beach and the water is cold because it comes from the Ropa
Valley. There has also been found traces of Bronze Age settlements here.
Pelekas: Here you will
find the best views and the most beautiful sunset on the entire island. It's like the sun dives into the dark blue sparkling ocean. The village is 272
km high and it's
situated 12km away from Corfu town. The view is magnificent. You can see the entire island
Corfu from here. All this together makes Pelekas a magical place and famous all over the
world. Pelekas is just uphill from Glyfada and Kontogialos.
 Glyfada: Its one of the largest sandy beaches in the island, which is
10km long. There are a lot of tavernas that serve fresh fish. The fish is caught by the
local fishermen. It's situated next to Kontogialos and Ag.Gordis, they share beach and
tavernas. The beaches in this area is very nice and the water crystal clear.

Kontogialos: A very
good beach, reminds a lot of what you can find in Glyfada. Some tavernas on the seaside
and a few rooms to rent.
Ag.Gordis:
The
best beaches lie in the dramatic and beautiful west coast of Corfu. Here you
will find hidden, small and beautiful bays with rocks and exciting caves. Also here you
will find lovely beaches. In a green and fertile valley, which leads to one of
Corfus
best beaches, you will find Ag.Gordis. A peaceful village with a cozy atmosphere. Its
a long and sandy beach and this area belong to Sinardes village. The Ag.Gordis place is
full with restaurants, tavernas, bars and sport activities and everything is surrounded of
olive trees. The attraction on this beach is a rock which is called "Ortholith" which
rises from the sea.

 Ag.Mattheos: It's a peaceful village and its on a foothill on the mountain of Ag.Deka. It's
a quiet place which is covered with olive trees. There is a road down to sunny beaches
like Prasoudi - Kanouli. Ag.Mattheos has a spectacular view of the Ionian sea.

Messongi: It's a
wonderful village on the south east side of Corfu. There are a lot of beaches with sand
and rocks. The water is warm here and it's full of nightlife, markets and clubs.
Moraitika: a typical
tourist area. The village was first inhabited in the 16th century by refugees from the
Peloponese. Some old remains of a Roman village has been found in this area. The center of
the old village is very beautiful.

Benitses:
Its one of the most developed tourist areas on the island. On the long coast
between Benitses and Perama you can find places for accommodation for every wallet, from
luxurious hotels to small apartments. Its also a lot of tavernas and nightclubs here.
According to the myths, King Alkoonioos has his magical garden here. In these days the
area with its pure beaches and beautiful vegetation something that impress the people that
come here.

Perama: this town is situated 7km from Corfu town, a place filled with hotels,
apartments and rooms to rent. From Perama you can look over to Mouse Island (Pontokonissi)
and its linked with Vlacherna and Kanoni by a causeway.

 Gastouri: It is a village on the east side of village Ag.Deka. It has one
of the philharmonic orchestra of Corfu and it dates all the way back to 1898. The
attraction of this place is the fresh bread baked in fireplaces with wood. The place is
filled with

Ag.Ioannis: It's a place with some hotels, sport activities like fishin, jetski. You can
find the usual water sport activities. You can find taverns which serves fresh fish. It's
a quiet and peaceful place.
